Academic Teams Overview

At St. Gabriel, we are proud of our academic teams! Our teachers and parent volunteers work hard to make sure that our academic teams have every opportunity to find success in one of the areas listed here.

If you are interested in participating in any of the following teams, please contact the school’s academic team coordinator or pay attention to tryout announcements during school.


7th & 8th Grade Academic Team

Catholic Schools Academic League (CSAL) – The CSAL is a Quick Recall league for participating schools in the area. Quick Recall matches begin in September and run for six consecutive weeks on Tuesdays. At the end of the regular season is a single elimination tournament held on Tuesdays and Thursdays until a winner is determined. See the Academic Teams’ Calendar for details regarding important dates.

Governor’s Cup Tournament – The Governor’s Cup Tournament is held in January – March and involves participants in Quick Recall, FPS, Written Composition, and Subject Assessments. Participants will be selected by the Academic Team Coordinator with input from the teachers and parent volunteers. Top finishers in the District will advance to the Regional and from there State. Future Problem Solving (FPS) – FPS is a special academic competition where teams of four students work together to develop an action plan to solve a futuristic problem in society. Topics can range from ‘Space Junk’ to ‘Natural Disaster Relief’ to ‘Robotics’ to ‘Propaganda’ to ‘Genetics’ and are set 25-100 years into the future. Teams compete during the Governor’s Cup Tournament with the top finishers advancing to the Regional and State.

3rd & 4th Grade Practice Team

In 3rd and 4th grade we have a practice workshop for students interested in building skills in Quick Recall. This workshop is offered in the Spring for all 3rd graders and any 4th graders that didn’t make the official academic team. The workshop is free to all student and meets once a week for five weeks.
