Lee was secretly ridiculing the Confideracy in letters denouncing the secession as a "revolution" and a betrayal of the efforts of our founders.  Lee was appointed to command all of Virginia's armed forces, and was named one of the five full generals of the Confederate Army.   When Lee was appointed a general for the south, he said he would not wear the insignia of  a general rank until the Civil war was won.  Robert E. Lee was one of the best strategic generals of the history of the U.S.  General Lee, only a few weeks after the Civil War suffered a horrific stroke, that later claimed his life on October 12th, 1870 in Lexington, Virginia.
