Each branch and
agency of the U.S. was responsible for maintaining its own
documents, many documents were lost or destroyed. Congress
established the National Archives in 1934. In
November 1935 most of the National Archives exterior work was complete. Earlier estimates about the need for space was
too low. By the late 1960s, the building reached its storage
capacity of 900,000 feet and the agency began renting large
amounts of
storage. The National Archives was incorporated into the General Services Administrations,
but in 1985 it was made into the NARA (National Archives and
Records Administration). In 1993 the second National
Archives building in College Park, Maryland, added 1.8 million feet to
the National Archives.
The National Archives Building in Washington, DC was renovated in 2003 to create
a better presentation, called the National Archives
Experience, which takes you on a journey through time and highlights American
struggles and triumphs.
