The
Lincoln Memorial is a memorial that is honoring Abraham Lincoln
the 16th president of the United States. The Lincoln Memorial is
located
in Washington D.C. and was designed by Henry Bacon. It's stands at the
west end of the national mall. Lincoln Memorial stands 190 feet tall
and is 119 feet wide.It is surrounded by 38 columns which
represented the states that were in the union at the time of Lincoln's
death. Inside this giant monument is a 19 foot tall marble statue of
Lincoln sitting in a chair.
two years after Lincoln was killed congress formed the Lincoln Monument
Association and their task was to build a monument that honored Lincoln
and then 2 million dollars were given to the Fund
the construction of the Lincoln Memorial started in 1914
Each column represents one state of the Union at the time of Lincoln's death
the statue of Lincoln was meant to be only 10 feet but the the size was almost doubled to 19 feet
this memorial is almost often used for gatherings such as
the famous speech "I Have a Dream " given by Martin Luther King in 1963
Memorial Day on May 30,19322 this Monument was dedicated to Abraham Lincoln 57 years after he died
at the ceremony there was about 50,000 people which half of them were Civil War veterans
each column surrounding the Lincoln Memorial is 44 feet tall
