Smithsonian Institution
Introduction
The Smithsonian Institute was
established on August 10, 1846 by James Smithson. The Institute was
founded for the "increase and diffusion of knowledge" from a legacy to
the United States. The Smithsonian Institution is an educational and
research institute and associated museum complex, administered and
funded by the government of the U.S. While most of its 19 museums, its
zoo, and 9 research centers facilities are located in Washington, D.C.
Interesting facts
- The world's largest museum and research complex, with 19 museums, 9 research
centers and more than 140 affiliate museums around the world.
- There has been a total of 13 Secretaries of the
Smithsonian. The first secretary was Joseph Henry. The current
Secretary of the Smithsonian is Gerald Wayne Clough.
- The Smithsonian have about 136 million exhibits, today.
