Interesting Facts and Information
Pierre L'Enfant was born on August 9,1754 in France. As a kid he was
always interested in building and construction. He was an engineer in
France before he came over to America to fight in the Revolutionary
war. George Washington found out that he was once an engineer and was
interested in building. George and Pierre got very close and were good
friends. This is why Pierre got the chance to plan the design of
Washington D.C.
In 1791 George Washington asked Pierre if he wanted
to make the design for America's capital city. He was always inspired
from french design of buildings but converted his ideas into American
type buildings. He got to work immediatly in 1791 when George asked

this would cost to much and would be to much work.
George Washington found a site that was 100 square
miles for the capital. The entire city was based on the idea that every
citizen was equally important. Capital hill became the center of the
city.

amazing, exciting life. He got to meet one of our greatest
leaders,George Washington. He planned the design of our nations capital
and was in the Revolutionary war. The design of the National Mall is
kind of shaped as a baseball diamond. Pierre had many ideas but he
pictured a type of a grand avenue to be one mile long and 400 feet
wide. The mall is about 2 miles long and covers 309 acres.
