History
- Vietnam
Veterans Memorial:
This was built by a Yale student named Maya Lin. The Vietnam War
was not a favorable war and many despised it. So they built a memorial
to
honor the soldiers who died. The memorial is made up of two black
granite stone walls. Highest point where they meet is 10 feet. It is
246 feet and
9 inches long. The granite was chosen because of its reflective
quality.
When visitors look at the wall they can see their reflection which is
meant to bring the past and present together. One wall points toward
the Washington Monument and the other points in the direction of the
Lincoln Memorial. The names are listed in order by the year they were
killed in action. This
was complete in 1982 and is the main
part of the Vietnam Memorial.
- The Three Soldiers:
The Three Soldiers is a bronze statue sometimes called The Three
Servicemen. It was completed in 1984 in honor of the heroic soldiers
who served. The statue is identifiable as a White
American, African American, and Hispanic American. The
soldiers were placed so that it appears that they are reading the names
of their friends in the wall.
- The
Women's Memorial:
This part was desinged by Glenna Goodacre. It was dedicated to the
women
of the United States who served in the Vietnam War
on November 11, 1993. Most of the women who served in this war were
nurses.
