Introduction

        The Air and Space Museum has the  has the largest collection of historical air and spacecraft in the world. More than nine million people come to Washington D.C. to visit the museum each year. The museum has air planes,spacecraft, missiles,rockets,engines,propellers,uniforms,instruments, and flight equipment. It is  a center for research into history and science of space flight, and also planetary science and terrestrial geology. Almost all of the spacecraft and aircraft that are on display are originals or back ups to the originals. The Air and Space Museum is the second most popular of the Smithsonian museum.

History and Interesting Facts


                  The Air and Space Museum has more than 30,000 aviation-related artifacts and 9,000 space artifacts. It also has the original Wright 1903 Flyer, which is the first engined-powered airplane, the Spirit of St. Louis, the plane used by Charles Lindbergh on the first transatlantic flight in 1927, and the Apollo 11 Command Module which carried the astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin on their first mission to the moon in 1969. The museum has 22 exhibit galleries, flight simulators, a three level museum shop, and food-court style restaurant. Besides having the planes and space modules, the  museum also has interactive exhibits like the Albert Einstein planetarium and the Langley I MAX theater. The Air and Space Museum has been the most visited museum in the world, attracting more than nine million people a year. Many of the objects inside the museum where from the United States Army and United States Navy.  The history of the National Air and Space Museum started in 1946, when Congress created the National Air Museum as a part of the Smithsonian Institution. The Air and Space Museum opened July 1st 1976 and was instantly popular.
