Interesting Facts

General George Meade was born December 31, 1815. He is known as the victor of The Battle of Gettysburg. It happened in the year of 1863. The Battle of Gettysburg was a vital victory for the Union because it stopped the South from advancing and gaining control of important cities in the North. Though Gen. Meade won the battle he was criticized because he didn't follow Robert E. Lee to Virginia when he fled. Gen. Meade was in many other battles including the Battle of Glendale where he was hit by a musket ball that struck him above the hip, hit his liver, and just missed the spine, but he didn't die until December 6, 1872, one day after Election Day. He now rests at Philadelphia's Laurel Hill Cemetery.
