Smithsonian

Introduction
The
Smithsonian is the world's largest museum and research center. In 1846,
James Smithson founded the building, which is in the shape of a castle.
It has 19 museums, 9 research centers, a national zoo and over 140
connected museums all over the world.
What is it?
This large
set of varying museums has many different cultural exhibits specific to
the theme of the museum. The 19 museum are very different from each
other as well as the nine research centers. Museums such as the
American History, Air and Space, African Art, Natural history and
many others are in this building.
Who is James Smithson?
James Maice is the founder of The Smithsonian. He
was born in France in 1765, as an illgeimate son of Hugh Smithson, a
wealthy Englishman who later became the Duke of Northumberland. In 1786
he was awarded with his Masters of Art degree from Pembroke College.
The next year, he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society. Both his
parents died shortly after the new century, which then he changed his
name to James Smithson. In 1846, his love of science and history led him to create The Smithsonian.

Interesting Facts
On August 10,1846, the establishing of the Smithsonian was passed
by Congress and signed by James K. Polk immediately. The museum cost
about 508,318.00 dollars. It is also the largest museum in the
world, with the Heritage building in Russia following in second.
The Castle
Smithson wanted this institute to stand out from any other. James
Renwick Jr., a prominent architect from New York, was up for the task.
James's donated 500,000 dollars. While still under construction, the
Castle was home to all Smithsonian operations and held the exhibit hall
from 1858-1865. Yet, in January 24, 1865, a fire destroyed the
upper level of the castle, which served as the main part of the museum.

History
The Smithsonian was made by James Smithson in 1846. He always loved
learning and wanted to provide a place of over-all knowledge. Smithson
moved to America and made the Smithsonian Institute.Built in 1885 by James Renwick Jr., the smithsonian castle is the
largest museum in the world. James Smithson was the creator and spent most of his life,and
his fortune on this building.
