Introduction

Arlington Cemetery's history began hen Robert E. Lee's estate was confiscated by the Federal Government in 1863. At first the sie was uses as head quarters for the union army but, the Ground was needed for burials for the union so they converted the area into a cemetery. The first person actually burried at the cemetery was William Henry Christman on May, 13, 1864. After this burial many more were added and soon land size was becoming an issue. At first 200 acres surrounded the mansion that Robert E. Lee orginally owned but today it's more then 600 acres.All this land is used ethier for visitor information or grave sites. To actually be burried at Arlington you must have been honorly discharged from the armed forces. Spouses and children of veterans are allowed to be burried and so are all former presidents. If you are a Medal of Honor holder, have been disabled because of war, or have been lost at sea you can be burried at Arlington. Some famous sites at the cemetry include Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The Eternal Flame of JFK and other famous grave sites.












Interesting Facts

More then 4 million people visit Arlington Cemetery every year.

The tomb of the unknown soldiers have never actually been officaly named.

More then 300,000 people are burried at the site.

Famous people burried at the site include presidents John Fizgerald Kennedy, Robert Francis Kennedy, and William Howard Taft. Chief Justice leaders Earl Warren, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr and Thurgood Marshall.

On May, 28, 1984 a unknown soldier from the Vietnam war was burried at Arlington cemetery he was DNA tested and proven to be First Lt. Michael Blassie a Air Force Pilot from St.Louis.

There are four Medal of Honor recipents burried in section 27 of the cemetery.

Arlington National Cemetery is the only military cemetery that is authorized to use horses as a regular part of its ceremony.


Therer are 6,900 burrials every year.

Every Memorial Day small U.S. flags are placed on every grave in the cemetery.
