The Washington
Monument was created in honor of George Washington for helping with the
Continental Army during the American Revolution. It was built between
1848 and 1884. Little action was taken when
congress planned to build the monument. Major Peter Charles L' Enfant
picked the site where this monument would be in 1791. Lack of funds and
illegal election postponed the construction of the monument. With the
outbreak on the Civil War, it was even harder to raise money to build
the Washington Monument. In 1836 a designing contest was held so the
society could pick which design they licked best. Robert Mills won.
