Intoduction

Henry Clay was a Senator and a Representative from Kentucky. He prevented slavery from spreading through the United States in the Missouri Compromise of 1820. He was born in Hanover County, Virginia. He was an american hero and was one of the most respected men during his time.

    Henry Clay moved to Lexington, Kentucky in 1797, at age 20, to become a lawyer. He was Speaker of the House and pushed for expansion and war with Britain. He also served as a peace comissioner in Ghent in the effort to end the war of 1812. Henry Clay wrote the "Great Compromise" to admit Missouri as a slave state and Maine to be admitted as a free state. In the election of 1824 was decided in the House of Representatives, John Quincey Adams won the presidency and he elected Henry Clay as his Secretary of State. He died from tuberculosis on June 29 , 1852.
