| General Robert E. Lee concentrated his full strength against Major, General George G. Meade's army of the Potomac at the crossroads countyseat of Gettysburg at what would come to be known as the battle of Gettysburg. On July 1st, confederate forces converged on the toen from west to north, driving Union defenders back through the streets to Cemetery Hill. during the night, reinforcements arrived for both sides, and the battle continued for two more days. |
