Introduction

The National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC was first thought of by Bishop Thomas J. Shahan in the early 1900's. The construction of the shrine was started in 1920. The 1st level, the lower level, was completed in 1926. Because of the Great Depression and World War II the Immaculate Conception Shrine was put off for a while but not forgotten. 30 years later construction was started on again and finally finished in 1959.
