May 1,  2008

Is it really the end of the school year? It has gone so fast! We have done so much!  I would like to speak to you of some of our accomplishments this year.  We gave over 3 tons of food to the community of Highview United Ministries. Our academic teams have won championships; our building has undergone a major beautification with new windows, bathrooms and entryway and we are going to be continuing making improvements into the next school year. Our wonderful PTSO has given us monies to buy new computers, Smart Boards, software and wiring through events such as the Taste of St. Gabriel and Walk-a-Thon. Our sport and cheerleading teams have enjoyed successes.  Student scores on national tests have improved.  Teachers have shared their talents at national conventions and demonstrated our technology prowess by inviting teachers from other schools to observe our techniques.  In other words, we have been truly blessed.

Special thanks to our Student Council who has donated thousands of dollars to various local and national charities.  They also bought new videos for our library and donated software to our computer lab that will help us create better videos in the future.  We will be holding elections for new student council members in the next week.

I am looking forward to “vacationing” in Washington , D.C. with our eighth graders next week.  This is such a nice trip.  I love the time to get to know our students a little better before they leave us and begin their high school years.  Wish us nice weather and safe travel.  Look for us on the web cam at the zoo!

Speaking of eighth graders; our graduation will be on May 20th at 7:00pm in church.  Our last day of school will be on the 21st with an 11:00 dismissal.

Please remember our new registration procedures.  We are doing this in the month of June.

May each of you have a wonderful summer break.  I am looking forward to working in the garden and tending my flower beds.  May you find something that gives you joy and relaxes you.  See you in August!

Dear Parents,

Sincerely,

Ms. Pam Huelsman,
Principal

Prayer of St. Gabriel
(Written by St. Gabriel Student Council Members)

O heavenly Father, please bless the students, staff and faculty of St. Gabriel.  Please grant the children of our school the gift of spiritual, academic, social and emotional education.  Please help us to continue to work together as a Christian family.  Please allow us to build our Catholic identity, and continue the rich history and heritage of our Catholic Education.  May we accept the differences of everyone's unique needs, talents and abilities.  May we reflect the images of Jesus by living the "Spirit of St,. Gabriel"  In your name, our Lord, we pray. Amen

  Important Reminders:

  • Club Dismissal:  Dismissal of any after school activities will take place in the back parking area where afternoon dismissal takes place.  Parents are to remain in that area and wait for the children to be brought out to them.  Parents are not to come to the school office to pick up students.

  • UNIFORM BREAK CLARIFICATIONMany parents have called and expressed concerns over the wording of our non uniform days.  Some teachers have been confused, also, so I would like to clarify what is in the handbook.  Students may wear dress slacks, casual slacks, which include cargo and khaki, and capris (below the knee). Jeans of any color may be worn.  No sweats, jogging suits or wind pants of any kind are allowed. No dresses, skirts, skorts or scooters or leggings can be worn on non uniform days. Shoes need to remain the same as on uniform days.  I hope this helps….pass the word!

  • Morning and Afternoon Dismissal Procedures:  Thank you for following proper carpool procedures.  Everyone has been doing an awesome job following the rules.  Keep up the good work!  We appreciate it!

  • HOMEWORK & GRADES As stated in the handbook, grades are posted online and updated on the 15th and 30th of each month.  They are available by using a password through Powerschool.  Please be sure to check and keep updated on your child’s grades and progress.

  • Please remember to call the absentee line by 8:30 AM if a student is unable to come to school or will be arriving later than 8:30.  The absentee line number is 239-9741.  Please refer to page 9 in the Student Handbook for detailed information.

  • Tutoring is available for your children.  For more information contact the school office to obtain a copy of the tutor list or write or call our Special Needs Coordinator, Mrs. Bev Forst, at bforst@stgabriel.net or 239-5535.

  • Dismissal calls:  We understand that emergencies sometimes arise; however, we are asking that calls for changes in dismissal be kept to a minimum and made by 1:30 PM.  The afternoon proves to be a very busy and hectic time. We greatly appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Pre-Kindergarten/After School/Summer Care  News

Bits and Bytes from the Computer Lab

  • Parents can view their K-5 children's Success Maker scores online through Power School.  Log on to Power School and click on your child's computer grade for the quarter.  There you can keep track of your child's progress quarterly for grades K-5.  Parents who wish to see their student's scores in grades 6-8 should contact Mrs. Kremer or the homeroom teacher.  Students in grades K-5 access the Success Maker program in the computer lab once weekly to improve their skills in the areas of reading (RR, IR, RW), spelling (SS) and math  (MCS).  Students in grades 6-8 use the program occasionally in the library and computer lab, when they don't have another project they are working on.  We ask that you encourage your child to work hard and make good use of their Success Maker sessions.

  • Want to know what your kids are doing in the computer lab this quarter?  Check it out here!

Student Council  News

  • Beach Day will be on 05/01/2008.  The dress code is jeans or capris with an appropriate top, sandals or tennis shoes.  Sunglasses and hats can be worn at lunch only.  No tube tops, sleeveless tops, mid drift tops or spaghetti straps.  You can bring a towel to sit on at lunchtime.

   PTSO News

  • Market Day News:  A big thank you to all who support Market Day every month. It’s a great fundraiser for our school. Last year we raised over $7500 from Market Day sales. If you’ve never tried it, give us a try. Order forms are available in the school office and in the back of church.

  • Have questions regarding the PTSO, its function and activities?  Contact Kelly Shaper at:  shaper3@bellsouth.net

  Library News:

  • Our last day for book check out this year is April 30th. All library books are due in the first week in May. The reading lists for Outstanding Catholic Reader were due in Apr. 15th. Last chance to get it in.

  • Parents please be careful about letting your children carry bottles with liquids in them in backpacks. Each year many library books are ruined due to liquids leaking out of bottles into backpacks. Also please remind your children not to eat or drink while looking at library books at home. The average cost of replacing a library book is $14.95 and if the book is returned damaged you are expected to pay for it. Thank you!

  • If you are cleaning out you may have some DVDs that your children have out grown or are tired of watching. The library would like donations of any gently used DVDs that are rated G or PG for the library collection. Thanks.

  Cafeteria News

  • St. Gabriel participates in the National School Lunch Program. The Archdiocese of Louisville Finance Office oversees the program for the entire Archdiocese. As a participant in the NSLP, our school’s lunch program receives high-quality, government-donated commodities such as cheese, beans, fruits, vegetables, ground beef, turkey, and other foods declared surplus by the USDA. We also receive fresh fruits and vegetables purchased through the Department of Defense buying network. This program has enabled students to enjoy fresh produce such as kiwi fruit, pineapple spears, strawberries, oranges, mini-carrots, and celery sticks.

  • MEAL PATTERN: Our lunch program follows certain guidelines outlined by the USDA and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. The lunch menus used by the Archdiocese schools are planned by the Food Service Office. Here is an outline of those requirements:

  • Milk – 8 oz.

  • Meat/Meat Alternative – 2 oz

  • Fruits/Vegetables – ¾ cup plus ½ cup over a week; 1 cup (8th grade)

  • Grains & Breads – 12 servings per week; 15 servings per week (8th grade)

  • Students are encouraged to choose items from all categories, but they need to choose at least three items to qualify for a reimbursable lunch.

  • PROGRAM COSTS: The lunch program supports itself at no cost to the school or parish. Commodities meet less than one-fourth of the total food costs for our lunch program. The remaining costs are covered by reimbursements from the USDA (23¢ per student lunch) and from income generated through ala Carte and meal sales to students and adults. Adult meals and meals for those students not in grades K-8 are not subsidized and are sold at a price that covers all costs.

  • LUNCH PRICES:

    • Students: $1.85 (this includes milk)

    • Adults: $3.50

    • Children: $2.75

    • Milk: 45¢ & $1.00

    •  Juice: 45¢

    •  Large Water: 50¢

    •  8 oz. Water: 45¢

    • Entrée: $1.25

    • Snack Items: 50¢ and 75¢

  • Lunch prices are set by the Archdiocese Food Service Office.

  • FREE & REDUCED LUNCH: Free and reduced-price meals are available to students who qualify. Applications are available from the school office. We encourage everyone who thinks they might qualify to apply. You can apply at any time during the school year.  There is a short grace period at the beginning of the school year for those who qualified during the previous school year but an application must be processed at the beginning of every school year for free or reduced-price service to continue. All information is kept strictly confidential.

  • SECOND ENTRÉE: Students and visitors may purchase a second entrée for $1.25.

  • We ask that students let the teacher know in the morning if they wish to purchase a second entrée such as a pizza, hamburger, chicken patty, etc. Students must have money in the account to purchase second entrees. If they have a deficit account, any money given to the cashier will go toward the account, not the purchase of a second entrée or ala carte.

  • LINE SERVERS: Each family has the opportunity to earn back part of their PTSO fee by working with us in the cafeteria at serving time. You get to see the students in action, meet other parents, and learn more about the lunch program. If interested, you can sign up for the days that are convenient to you at registration. Each time you work you will get $12.00.  We also need parents who can work more than the four times. In order to comply with Archdiocese and State of Kentucky guidelines, parents who would like to work more often will have to see Lisa Leister and be put on payroll. Parents can choose to volunteer, also.
  • If you have any questions or concerns regarding the lunch program or your child's account, you may contact fservice@stgabriel.net or cafeteria@stgabriel.net
