Below are the notes the students copied into their science notebooks during class. These will be updated as more are added. The students also have handouts that should be glued into their notebooks. All of this information is extremely important for studying for quizzes/test.
Circulatory System and Heart Notes
1. The movement of blood through your body is called circulation
2. Blood is pushed through the blood vessels by the heart.
3. The circulatory system includes the heart, blood vessels, and the blood.
4. The heart is divided into two halves.
5. Each half has an upper chamber (atrium) that receives blood, and a lower chamber (ventricle) that pumps blood out.
6. The heart chambers contract, or squeeze, which keeps the blood moving.
7. There are 3 kinds of blood vessels: arteries, veins, and capillaries.
8. You can feel your heart beating when you feel your pulse. The pulse is the throbbing caused by blood rushing into the arteries each time the ventricles contract.
9.
Blood is made up of cells and a liquid called plasma.
10.
Red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to body cells.
Oxygen-rich blood is bright red.
11.
White blood cells fight disease-causing germs.
12.
Platelets are parts of cells that can stick together to help the blood
clot, or thicken.
13.
Plasma carries nutrients to cells and picks up wastes such as carbon
dioxide and delivers them to organs such as the lungs to be excreted.
14.
The heart beats and rests in less than one second.
15.
The faster the heart beats, the more blood and oxygen it delivers to the
rest of the body.
16.
Regular exercise strengthens heart muscle so that the heart has to beat
fewer times to pump the same amount of blood.
17.
Your heart has to work less hard when you are asleep than when you are
active.
