Kentucky Treasure Box

Each student will make a “Treasure Box” filled with Kentucky “treasures.”  The box is to be no larger than a shoebox (max. 9”x14”), must have a lid that closes, and nothing should be hanging out of the box (so they can be stacked when they are turned in).  The student may decorate the outside of the box if he/she chooses, however, all decorations must be flush with the box (No 3-D).  The student’s name and homeroom is to be written clearly on the top of the box.

Requirements

There are five categories listed below.  You must include one item for each category.  You must also include an index card for each item/category.  On the index card, you should include 4-5 sentences (only 4-5 please) about the topic, the item, and what it represents.  This is to be written in your own words.  Writing should be neatly done and have no spelling or grammatical errors (it may be handwritten or typed).  An example of an index card is attached.  The index cards (no larger than 5”x8”) are to be placed in an envelope with your name (first and last) and homeroom on the outside of the envelope.  Do not attach it to the box just place it inside, unsealed.

Annual Events- The Kentucky Derby Festival

The Kentucky Derby Festival is held for the two weeks before the Kentucky Derby (the first Saturday in May).  There are events like Thunder Over Louisville, the Great Balloon Race, the Balloon Glow, the Mini Marathon, and the Pegasus Parade.  The item I have included in my Treasure Box is a Pegasus Pin.  These are sold to raise money to make the Derby Festival possible.  Wearing one will get you free admission to most Derby Festival events.
