Biography:

I am a product of the Jefferson County Public School System, having attended Wheeler & Goldsmith Elementaries, Myers Middle and Seneca High Schools.  I became a parishioner of St. Gabriel through the RCIA process in 1983, and have been active in music ministry and religious education ever since. I am currently co-director, with my husband, of the St. Gabriel Ensemble (17 years). I have taught many levels of Religious Education (grades 1, 2, 4, and high school, as well as Children's Catechumenate) in the parish and school.

My husband, Jim Kuchenbrod, is also very active in the parish as the Scoutmaster of Troop 346.  We are the proud parents of Andrew, 16, a junior at DeSales, and Virginia, 14, in 8th grade at  St. Gabriel School.  In my free time, when I'm not driving one of my children somewhere, I enjoy artsy and outdoorsy projects including painting, quilting, gardening and hiking in the woods as much as my bad knees permit.

READING SKILLS This week we are reading Anthony Reynoso : Born to Rope. Vocabulary words:  dappled, exhibition, landscape business, ranch, thousands. As you read together, have your child retell main ideas and details from this personal narrative. The test will be “open book” and we will also do our own personal narrative paragraph as an additional assessment.

MATH SKILLS We will finish telling time to the closest 5 minutes (and beyond) this week! You can help at home by offering many opportunities to practice on an analog clock. Testing on this skill will take place in the coming weeks as individual students are ready.

We will continue to practice addition and subtraction of large numbers with regrouping every day. This will include a graded assignment in each area – add or subtract- each week. Timed tests on the basic facts ended long ago. Still, it is important to continue working toward memorization of the facts if your child has not yet mastered them.

A few other guidelines:

If there are belt loops, there should be a belt in them.

If the socks don’t show above the shoes, change to higher socks.

Thank you for your attendance at conferences. Now that we are in the fourth quarter of the year, and almost in third grade, you will notice that we pick up the pace quite a bit. Please supervise and assist your child with homework and studying as needed. Mrs. Sortor and I will no longer be checking the homework notebook. When in doubt, phone a friend or check the web.

I will be posting additional information to this website throughout the year, including homework assignments, important dates, reminders, newsletters, and other miscellaneous items of interest.  I will be communicating through your child when important things have been put on the page.  I envision that this website will become a primary means of communication and a valuable resource for both you and your child!

You may contact me via email, send a note with your child, or leave a message at the school office (239-5535).  I will respond to your message as soon as possible.
